Training and Assessment Program – Ethics, Professional Standards and Responsible Conduct
With the assistance of an RCR Task Force consisting of respected faculty and researchers who oversaw the initial development and implementation of assessment instruments on ethics training, an RCR Workshop, and the promotion of cultural change and buy-in, ODU has proposed a new plan to integrate training in RCR ethics and professional standards into the culture, and programmatic requirements of its graduate and research training activities.
To accomplish this goal, ODU will develop a series of training activities including:
- Online, Web-based modules
- Advanced workshops interrelated with the training modules
- A university lecture series
- A plan to integrate modules, workshops, and seminars into their Future Professionals/Future Professoriate programs
- An overview module incorporated into new student orientations
- RCR training as part of Graduate Faculty Certification and Thesis/Dissertation approval.
The 35 to 40 minute training modules will feature “real-life” scenarios, case studies, and “interactive” self-checks, with the workshops building upon the information taught in the modules to reinforce the concepts of ethical reasoning.
The university lecture series will be presented by a prominent member of the academic community who will discuss an issue of national prominence involving ethics and professional conduct. In addition, faculty participating in the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program will successfully complete the online modules, attend the companion advanced workshop and participate in the lecture series, and then provide feedback on their training. Incoming students will receive an overview of the importance of training in RCR, ethics, and professional development.
Approval of thesis/dissertation prospectus and certification of graduate faculty will hinge on the successful understanding and documentation of training in ethics and professional standards based on material from the online modules and workshops.
