Graduate Education in the Responsible Conduct of Research and Creativity
To expand its training efforts in responsible conduct of research and creativity (RCRC), which include the NIH online RCR tutorial along with departmental RCR courses and seminars, FSU created a cross-disciplinary one-credit graduate course addressing the nine elements of RCR education identified by the ORI, and using the ORI's Introduction to the Responsible Conduct of Research as the text.
The course, taught each spring semester, involves large group discussions led by the Dean and the chairs of the Human Subjects Committee (IRB) and the Animal Use and Care Committee (IAUCC) as well. The large group sessions are followed by discipline-specific small group discussions led by distinguished FSU research faculty. In preparation for the small group discussions, students read discipline-specific case studies and submit reaction papers electronically to the course web site in Blackboard. Tuition and the text book are provided for students who successfully complete the course. The graduate assistant for the course is a student who completed the course in a previous semester.
FSU developed a pre- and post-RCRC test to assess the effectiveness of the program, and administers annual surveys to find out students' perceptions of the helpfulness of the program. Finally, FSU will consider instituting a new policy whereby students will be evaluated on RCRC knowledge as part of the preliminary examination and/or thesis and dissertation defense.
